DOW — Inhibited Glycol Heat Transfer Fluids

DOWFROST™ Inhibited Propylene Glycol

DOWFROST & DOWFROST HD | –45°C to 160°C | UAE Stock

DOWFROST™ fluids are inhibited propylene glycol-based heat transfer fluids for low-temperature, water-based closed-loop systems. Both grades contain specially formulated packages of industrial corrosion inhibitors that protect system metals and extend equipment life.

Because propylene glycol carries low acute oral toxicity — against the moderate acute oral toxicity of ethylene glycol — DOWFROST fluids are the usual specification wherever a leak could reach product, people or potable water. The inhibitor packages are long-lasting and replenishable, extending the interval between fluid change-outs and lowering total cost of ownership.

Two Grades Available
DOWFROST

–45°C to 120°C. 96% propylene glycol with specially formulated packages of industrial inhibitors that help prevent corrosion. Because propylene glycol fluids have low acute oral toxicity, DOWFROST is often used in applications where contact with food or beverage products could occur. Dow lists it for secondary heating and cooling, freeze and burst protection of pipes, and deicing, defrosting and dehumidifying.

DOWFROST HD

–45°C to 160°C. 94% propylene glycol with a specially designed package of industrial corrosion inhibitors and higher reserve alkalinity (15.0 ml min). Dyed bright fluorescent yellow to aid leak detection. Dow lists it for single-fluid process heating and cooling, closed-loop duty, and water-based HVAC where propylene glycol is preferred or required.

Supplied as concentrate or pre-diluted to your required concentration, from Abu Dhabi with fast dispatch across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

DOWFROST™ vs DOWFROST™ HD — Typical Properties

The deciding questions are top-end temperature and whether a leak could reach food or beverage product. DOWFROST HD runs 40°C hotter and carries a stronger inhibitor package and a leak-detection dye; DOWFROST is the grade Dow positions for potential food or beverage contact.

Concentration Required for Freeze & Burst Protection

Freeze protection keeps the fluid pumpable; burst protection only prevents the pipe splitting — the fluid may still slush. Note how much less glycol burst protection needs, which matters when you are balancing heat transfer efficiency against cold-weather risk.

Dow advises selecting a temperature at least 3°C (5°F) lower than the expected lowest ambient for an extended margin of protection. Inhibitor levels must be adjusted below 30% glycol for DOWFROST and below 20% for DOWFROST HD. These are typical figures, not specifications.

Why Specify DOWFROST™

Formulated Inhibitor Packages

Specially formulated industrial inhibitor packages help prevent corrosion across system metals, with reserve alkalinity of 10.0 ml on DOWFROST and 15.0 ml minimum on DOWFROST HD.

Low Acute Oral Toxicity

Propylene glycol carries low acute oral toxicity against the moderate toxicity of ethylene glycol — the safer specification wherever a leak could reach people, product or potable water.

Replenishable Inhibitor Package

Inhibitors are long-lasting and can be topped up rather than requiring a full change-out, extending fluid life and cutting the cost of maintaining a closed loop.

Corrosion & Scale Protection

Formulated inhibitors protect system metals including copper against the corrosion and scaling that raise operating cost, cut efficiency and lead to system failure.

Leak Detection Dye (HD)

DOWFROST HD is dyed fluorescent yellow-green so leaks are found fast during operation and maintenance rather than after damage is done.

Supplied to Your Concentration

Available as concentrate or pre-diluted to the concentration your lowest ambient demands — removing on-site mixing and the water-quality risk that can compromise the inhibitor package.

Typical Applications

HVAC chilled water loops
Hydronic heating
Food & beverage processing
Dairy facilities
Breweries & fermentation cooling
Cold storage & refrigerated warehouses
Supermarket secondary loops
Geothermal / ground source heat pumps
Solar hot water systems
Thermal energy storage (TES)
Fire sprinkler systems
Ice rinks & immersion freezing

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between DOWFROST and DOWFROST HD?

DOWFROST is 96% propylene glycol with 4% performance additives, rated -45°C to 120°C, and is the grade used where contact with food or beverage products could occur. DOWFROST HD is 94% propylene glycol with 6% performance additives and a specially designed industrial corrosion inhibitor package, rated to a higher 160°C, with reserve alkalinity of 15.0 ml against 10.0 ml. HD is dyed bright fluorescent yellow for leak detection and is the usual choice for closed-loop and water-based HVAC duty.

Is DOWFROST safe for food processing applications?

Dow states that because propylene glycol fluids have low acute oral toxicity, DOWFROST propylene glycol-based fluids are often used in applications where contact with food or beverage products could occur. DOWFROST HD contains a package of industrial corrosion inhibitors and is not positioned for food contact duty. For any application involving potential food or potable water contact, confirm the current regulatory status directly with Dow before specifying.

Why choose propylene glycol over ethylene glycol?

Propylene glycol has low acute oral toxicity compared with the moderate acute oral toxicity of ethylene glycol. In food processing, potable water systems, occupied buildings and anywhere a leak could reach people or product, propylene glycol is the safer specification.

What concentration of DOWFROST do I need?

Concentration is set by the lowest temperature the system will see. Higher glycol percentages give deeper freeze and burst protection but reduce heat transfer efficiency and increase viscosity. Dow recommends selecting for a temperature at least 3°C below the expected lowest ambient. Inhibitor levels need adjusting below 30% glycol for DOWFROST and below 20% for DOWFROST HD, so weaker dilutions should be discussed before use.
